After studying Graphic Design at Manchester University in the 80's I moved back to London and began a career as a magazine designer and art director. I was the second art director at UK Elle after Clive Crook, and then went on to be Design Director at Vogue under Robin Derrick in the 90's. After 4 years Condé Nast invited me to Sydney to art direct Vogue Australia. 16 issues later I returned to London to Launch Red magazine for EMAP. (The logo is in my handwriting). A brief stint on a web start up led me back to Condé Nast to launch UK Glamour in 2001, arguably the most successful magazine launch in the last 30 years. We created the 'Glamour' handbag size look that would be rolled out across the world in over 12 countries. In 2005 I changed desks at Condé Nast and launched Easy Living where I was Creative Director for 4 years before going freelance.
Over the years I have been doing freelance art direction for Boden, M&S, Monsoon, Tatler, Cath Kidston and Clarks shoes among others.
More recently I was brought in to revamp the look of Good Housekeeping for Hearst. It is now the biggest selling women's glossy in the country, ironically outselling Glamour for the first time. And winner of PPA magazine of the year 2015.
As well as art directing I have written and illustrated several award winning children's books published here and across the world, including the USA, France, Sweden, Taiwan and Korea.
My passion has always been image making, drawing or photographing anything and everything. If I'm not directing world class photographers I'm increasingly shooting my own pictures for various magazines and commercial clients.
Recently I've been working on various brands from Karen Millen to M&S House of Fraser to Gina Shoes. I'm currently Art Director of MINE magazine and creative director of the new art and culture magazine PERFECT BOUND.
In the end its all about GOOD IDEAS, Great words and great images working together whether thats on paper or online it doesn't matter.
